Why do we begin Lent with such a stark reminder of death as Ash Wednesday?
Precisely because we are, during this season, preparing ourselves to live out the vows of the baptismal covenant more faithfully. And baptism is about death first.
As Paul reminds us in Romans 6:4–5, in baptism we are co–buried with Christ into a death like his, that we may be raised with him in a Resurrection like his. We die — to sin, and to the power of death as a power over us. Easter Season is the time for focusing on life in the Risen Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.
So Lent begins with all of us together, taking on the ashes as a sign of our mortality and sinfulness. We acknowledge we are dust, and to dust we shall return.
Come worship on Ash Wednesday — March 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary.
The God We Can Know explores the “I Am” sayings of Jesus found in the Gospel of John. One by one, Jesus’ statements grab our imagination, reveal more about his identity and purpose, and connect us to the God of Moses, who spoke the first “I Am.”
These significant yet ordinary images (bread, light, shepherd, vine, and more) give us insightful ways to experience Jesus and point us to a God who wants to be known. Sign up at the Welcome Center, or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Study guide is $10.
